Diplomatic efforts continue in the Middle East to broker a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.
US Secretary of State John Kerry is working with Arab leaders to find a solution that would be acceptable to both sides.
Hamas rejected a ceasefire proposed by Egypt last week. Israel had agreed to the plan, but reports suggest there are mixed feeling among the Israeli leadership. Some agree the time is right for a ceasefire; others would rather continue to current action to eradicate the tunnels used by Hamas to smuggle arms into Israel.
Kerry said all sides need to address what he described as the complicated underlying issues that have given rise to the latest bout of violence.
But he stopped short of agreeing to reopen the peace talks that he had worked on for nearly nine months and which abruptly broke off last April.
