There is some relief for the families of those who died in the Malaysia Airlines crash in eastern Ukraine five days ago.  A train carrying the bodies arrived in the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv today en route to the Netherlands.   Most were Dutch citizens.

Pro-Russian rebels have handed over the black boxes from the downed plane, after it plunged into rebel held eastern Ukraine. Both boxes were given to Malaysian investigators on condition they be delivered to experts at the International Civil Aviation Organization.

Meantime, European Union foreign ministers are meeting in Brussels to consider further sanctions against Russia because of the downing of the Malaysian jetliner, with Britain and some other countries demanding much tougher measures.  Lithuania’s Foreign Minister blames “terrorists supplied by Moscow” for the airliner’s destruction and the deaths of all 298 people aboard, and said he hopes today’s meeting will approve beefed-up sanctions against Russia.

Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird yesterday announced expanded sanctions against Russia, adding that Vladimir Putin bears ultimate responsibility for the crash.  “To borrow a phrase from a famous English writer, he has let slip the dogs of war and now he has to face up to the consequences.”

Canada has so far imposed 110 sanctions against Russia since the invasion of Ukraine began earlier this year.
