German authorities say they are now in possesion of more major art works – from the apartment of the late collector Cornelius Gurlitt.
The latest pieces include two sculptures – believed to be works by Edgar Degas and Auguste Rodin.
A task force working to identify whether some works in the collection were stolen by the Nazis, says in a statement that “a small number” of further works have come to light – but declined to elaborate or comment on why they were never previously seized by Augsberg-based prosecutors.
They impounded more than 1,200 works by renowned artists including Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse that Gurlitt had hoarded in his Munich apartment.
Gurlitt died on May 6th.
A probate court confiscated the newly-found works, along with other items comprising Gurlitt’s estate – after his death.
The octogenarian recluse left his estate to the Kunstmuseum in Bern, Switzerland – but the museum has yet to officially accept the inheritance – and has until the end of the year to take possession of Gurlitt’s gift.
