Canada’s announced it’ll be imposing new sanctions against Russia in the coming days while Washington’s already taking new steps.

U.S. President Obama says the measures he announced this afternoon will hit Russia’s energy, finance and arms sectors with a ”bigger bite.”

The European Union’s also announced first sanctions against Russia over its suspected role in Ukraine.

Last week, Canada announced sanctions targeting arms, energy and financial entities.

Today’s statement from Prime Minister Harper says the new sanctions would be applied against the Russian government and those closest to it.

He says President Putin’s failure to cease backing armed rebels in eastern Ukraine constitutes a real threat to international peace and security.
