The latest Egyptian-brokered truce is designed to end the seven-week war with Hamas.

It took effect at 12pm ET and is described as an ”open-ended” ceasefire that will see Israel ease its blockade of Gaza to allow humanitarian and construction materials to enter the territory.

An Israeli official says indirect talks on more substantial issues would begin within a month in Cairo.

Those mediated negotiations are expected to include Hamas’ demands for an end to the blockade, the building of an airport and seaport and Israel’s calls for Hamas to disarm.

Israel and Egypt imposed the blockade in 2007, after Hamas seized Gaza by force.

Under the restrictions, virtually all of Gaza’s 1.8 million residents cannot trade or travel.

Only a few thousand are permitted to leave the area every month.
