It has been confirmed that rock singer and composer Sting will return to the Broadway stage to try to keep “The Last Ship” afloat.
Sting composed the score to the musical that’s based on his boyhood experiences growing up in a shipbuilding town. The musical has been struggling at the box office since it opened to mixed reviews last month. For the week of November tenth, it only sold 61% of available seats; not enough to cover its running costs.
Sting will step into the lead role in the musical for a month beginning December 9th. It’s not great news for Jimmy Nail, the actor who has been playing the role since it’s pre-Broadway world premiere in Chicago.
There is also a report that Sting will give up his royalties from the show.
It will be his first appearance on Broadway since he appeared in Threepenny Opera in 1989.
