What began as a protest against a grand jury decision quickly spun out of control in Ferguson Missouri last night.

The suburb of St. Louis is under seige for the second time this year as rioting broke out in response to a grand jury decision not to indict the white police officer who shot and killed a black teenager in August.

St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar said some people took to the streets in legitimate protest, but most were there for mayhem. He says he saw very few legitimate protesters on the streets. Rioters looted and burned at least a dozen businesses in Ferguson’s downtown core. Two police cruisers were torched and more than 100 gunshots could be heard.

Belmar says he needs another ten thousand officers to control the crowds.

US President Barack Obama appeared on television last night calling for calm. He said the United States is a country based on the rule of law, and Americans have to honour the decision of the grand jury not to indict officer Darren Wilson.

Demonstrators took to the streets in cities across the US after the grand jury decision was announced last night. The other protests were peaceful.
