John Tory begins his second full day as Toronto’s mayor with his first city council meeting.  At 2:00 today, Tory will be officially sworn in as the city’s 65th mayor.

His Deputy Mayor Denzil Minnan-Wong told the New AM 740’s Goldhawk Fights Back. there is a lot of optimism about this new council.

“I think there’s a certain level of relief that we’ve turned a page on the old council and some of the, shall we say, speed bumps along the way (laughs), and that we’ll be able to move past those and get on with people’s business,” Minnan-Wong explained.

At least one city councillor is vocal against the appointment of Denzil Minnan-Wong as deputy mayor.  Kristyn Wong-Tam says many of Tory’s new team are councillors who propped up Mayor Ford. But Tory told CP24 when he got to work this morning, he’s standing by his choice for deputy mayor.

“I think I have to put somebody in place who’s going to help me get results for people, because that’s why I got elected as mayor,” Tory said, “and I really tried in my appointments to pick people who were the best in all accounts.”

It appears Tory has averted a showdown with at least one city councillor.  Michael Thompson says he’s ended his effort to stay on as vice chair of the Toronto Police Services Board, which would allow Tory to take the seat himself.  Thompson said he and the mayor “had a good chat” and says he “doesn’t think it’s in anybody’s interest to start off the new term of a new mayor fussing and fighting.”  Thompson will remain chair of the economic development committee and will be on the executive.

As for the special guest Mayor Tory has asked to address council this afternoon, he’s not saying because “we’ll keep that as sort of a small mystery until this afternoon when people start coming into the council chambers.”

Tory did say it’s not a sports figure, in reference to the choice by former Mayor Ford to have hockey commentator Don Cherry address council.
