A new era has begun at Toronto City Hall.

Incoming Toronto Mayor John Tory warmly thanked his predecessor Rob Ford for his service to the city – and Ford, who is fighting a rare form of cancer, flashed Tory the “thumbs up.”

During today’s swearing-in ceremony for city councillors, Tory wished the ailing Ford a speedy recovery – and for his return to civic life.

Tory and Ford also shared a fist bump, as the controversial ex-mayor-turned-councillor cannot risk exposure to germs through handshakes in his delicate condition.

And in contrast to the Ford years, Tory’s guest of honour was the renowned anti-violence advocate, Louise Russo – whereas Ford was welcomed into office by outspoken hockey commentator Don Cherry.

The new mayor also welcomed the former premier of Ontario – 85 year old Bill Davis –  whom Tory worked for at Queens Park – more than 30 years ago.
