They don’t ever see their names on Broadway marquees.

They don’t earn star salaries.

But Broadway couldn’t exist without them.

They are the actors, singers, and dancers who perform in the chorus of Broadway musicals. They’re called “Gypsies”. And for two days every year, they take centre stage.

The 26th annual edition of The Gypsy of the Year is being held tonight and tomorrow. It will feature performances by the casts of some of the current Broadway and touring shows, and appearances by non-gypsies such as Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick.

The show will also mark the 40th anniversary of a landmark musical. The Wiz was one of the first large-scale, big budget Broadway musicals to feature an all-black cast. It won seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical.

The Gypsy of the Year will be chosen by a jury of their peers tomorrow.

The annual event is a fundraiser for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. Last year’s edition raised more than four million dollars.
