Good news for anyone who drives on the Gardiner Expressway.
Mayor John Tory has announced that the construction that has clogged the aging expressway for months is going to be finished two months sooner than expected.
Tory says all lanes of the Gardiner will be open in May for the summer driving season. He says the early completion will be accomplished by having crews work longer hours. It will cost two million dollars, but Tory says the slower commute times are costing a million dollars a day in lost productivity, so it’s money well spent.
Tory says it’s part of his plan to shake things up at city hall. He says he’s becoming something of a nuisance but repeatedly asking how projects can be accomplished more quickly and more efficiently, and he will continue to ask those questions because it’s why he was sent there.
The mayor is warning that the Gardiner will have to be closed down again next fall for more maintenance. But he says he will once again be pushing for an accelerated schedule to wrap up the lane closures early.
