Toronto’s new mayor thinks the Police Services Board chose wisely – when it reappointed Dr. Alok Mukherjee as chair – for another year.
John Tory was responding to reporters – after the seven-member board gave the embattled chair the thumbs-up at the first meeting of the year.
Tory said, “This year we have the selection of a new chief, we have negotiations ongoing, we have the whole community engagement issue to be dealt with – and I just think he will be the right man to lead us forward to address these matters.”
There was speculation over whether Mukherjee would be back – after he came under fire for two controversial posts on his personal Facebook page.
One of them compared police killings in the U.S. to terrorism and ebola.
Mike McCormack, the Toronto Police Association president, called Mukherjee’s reappointment “irrelevant.”
Mukherjee has been the Board chair for a decade – and says he sees the coming year as a chance to wrap up some important initiatives – before handing over the reins to someone new.
