Media giant BCE says Kevin Crull is leaving his position as president of Bell Media, effective immediately.

Late last month Crull issued a public apology for intruding on the editorial integrity of CTV’s news team – during its coverage of a decision by the CRTC – requiring broadcasters to offer low-cost packages to cable subscribers.

In his apology, Crull said he was wrong to try to influence the editorial decisions of CTV journalists – and had apologized to the team directly.

The mea culpa followed a report in the Globe and Mail that Crull had demanded that journalists not give any airtime to CRTC chairman Jean-Pierre Blais.

Bell Canada president and CEO George Cope said in a statement announcing the departure that Crull had been a significant part of Bell’s strategic transformation – but said the independence of Bell Media’s news operations is of paramount importance to the company and to Canadians.

The announcement was made after the markets closed today.
