History will be made at Cannes this year.

For the first time, a female director will kick off the famous film festival on the French Riviera.

Emmanuelle Bercot has the honour.

Her french drama “La Tete Haute,” will open the festival on May 13th.

The film is about the upbringing of a juvenile delinquent – and stars Catherine Deneuve.

Cannes has come in for criticism for not programming more films directed by women – and the head of the festival, Thierry Fremaux says the choice of “La Tete Haute” – is a clear reflection of the desire to see the festival start with a different piece, which is both bold and moving.

This year’s jury is presided over by Joel and Ethan Coen.

The Cannes line-up will be announced Thursday for the festival – running May 13th to 24th.
