His music has become part of the soundtrack of our lives.

And now American composer Phillip Glass has been honoured as the Glenn Gould Prize Laureate – which this year comes with $100,000 – and the opportunity to select an outstanding young artist to receive the City of Toronto Glenn Gould Protege Prize – and $15,000.

Through his operas, film scores, symphonies and wide ranging collaborations with other artists, 78-year-old Glass has had a powerful impact on the musical, artistic and intellectual life of his times.

In a statement, Glass says “It is for me a special honour as I am one of the many musicians who have been inspired by Glenn Gould. His name is associated with a lifetime of excellence in music interpretation and performance. I am also aware that this award places me in the company of some of the most celebrated names in the broad spectrum of the music of our time.”

Both Phillip Glass and his protege will have their work honoured at a gala ceremony – and through a series of public events presented within the next twelve months.
