The Bata Shoe Museum on Bloor West is celebrating its 20th anniversary this week. The Museum was founded by Sonja Bata, now 88 years-old, who has been collecting and studying the historical, social and cultural significance of shoes for more than 60 years.
Today, the Bata Shoe Museum boasts one of the largest ethnological collections of footwear on the planet and is one of the most highly respected institutions of its kind.
As part of its 20th anniversary celebrations the museum will launch its latest exhibit this weekend: Standing Tall: The Curious History of Men in Heels.
Among the hundreds of shoes, visitors will have the opportunity to view John Lennon’s original 1960s Beatle boot, platforms worn by Elton John in the 1970s, and recent heels from haute couture collections.
