With several school strikes looming on the horizon, Education Minister Liz Sandals wants to look at changing the legislation that requires teachers’ unions to give a five-day advance notice of strike action.

Sandals says it’s not enough for the unions to simply say they are planning job action on a particular date. She says they should be required to state whether it is a full-on strike, or a work to rule, and if it is a slowdown, they should have to say what services are being withheld.

Her comments come as the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario is planning a province-wide strike Monday, but is refusing to confirm until Friday if that will be a full strike or a work-to-rule.

The Liberals brought in legislation last year that separated bargaining into local and central talks, but it also said employees must give five days’ notice before striking.
