The fate of the Gardiner Expressway east of Jarvis will be decided by Toronto City Council at their meeting June 9-10.

Members of the city’s public works committee spent yesterday listening to arguments over what to do with the 2.4 kilometre stretch of the expressway.

Janet De Silva is President and CEO of the Toronto Region Board of Trade, and like Mayor John Tory, believes an 8-lane boulevard link with the Don Valley Parkway, known as the hybrid option, is the way to go.

“With the hybrid, we feel that offers a much shorter construction time frame.  It unlocks the development potential for the Unilever site which fosters a lot of job creation, a lot of opportunity for that part of the city,” De Silva explained.

But former chief city planner Paul Bedford backs the idea of tearing down that portion of the expressway.

“I think it’s the most intelligent logical choice for the council to make at this point in time, but also for the future,” Bedford insisted.

After the all day meeting, public works committee members voted to send the staff Gardiner report to council without endorsing either one of the two options.
