The governing body of World soccer has been dealt a double blow today. First off, seven senior FIFA officials were arrested in Zurich relating to a U.S. corruption probe involving bribes of more than 150-million dollars. The suspects are being held pending extradition to the United States and include Jeffery Webb who runs CONCACAF, the governing body of international soccer in North and Central America and the Caribbean. A couple of hours after the arrests, Swiss prosecutors opened separate criminal proceedings related to the awarding of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups to Russia and Qatar respectively. Officials are gathered at FIFA Headquarters in Zurich for their annual congress. Friday, Sepp Blatter, who was not arrested, is expected to be re-elected as president.
