Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister says it’s up to Iraqi ground forces to take the fallen city of Ramadi – back from Islamic militants.
And Rob Nicholson says any help from Canada would be strictly in the form of assaults by fighter jets, which are also dropping bombs in neighbouring Syria.
The successful campaign last month by fighters from Islamic State to win control of Ramadi, in Anbar province west of Baghdad, was its biggest military gain so far.
The fighting in Anbar, Iraq’s largest Sunni province, continued today – as ISIL suicide bombers driving Humvees packed with explosives attacked a police base – and killed at least 41 police and Shiite militiamen.
Nicholson was on his way to Paris for a large international meeting Tuesday – with officials from countries involved in the fight against the militant group.
Before the talks began, Nicholson agreed with his host, French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius – who also says it’s up to Iraqi forces to retake Ramadi.
