A job with the government appears to pay more than the same job in the private sector.

A new study by the Fraser Institute, an independent, non-partisan Canadian public policy think-tank, finds government employees in Canada, whether at the federal, provincial or local levels, receive 9.7 percent higher wages, on average, than comparable employees in the private sector.

The study also shows the government sector as a whole, enjoys superior non-wage benefits. in 2013, 87.8 percent of government employees in Canada were covered by a registered pension plan compared with only 24 percent in the private sector. Between 2009 and 2013, government employees retired 2.4 years earlier on average than Canada’s private sector employees.  In addition, 3.6 percent of private sector employees experienced job loss in Canada in 2013 compared to only 0.7 percent of government employees.

The researchers used Statistics Canada’s Labour Force Survey data from January to December 2013 to make their conclusions.
