Some one million public elementary students across the province may not receive a report card at the end of the month. Instead, parents should expect a letter, notifying them whether their children are moving on to the next grade.

This change in procedure stems from an ongoing administrative work to rule by Ontario’s public elementary teachers.

David Clegg is the president of the York Region branch of the Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario.  He says a pass-fail letter will not undermine the relationship teachers have with parents and students.

“At this point in the school year, parents and teachers have developed a relationship and there’s been ongoing dialogue…so there shouldn’t be any surprises when it comes to that.  The marks are the cumulative outcome of this term, and it will provide accurate information,” Clegg explained.

The summer break does not signal the end of the dispute between the teachers unions and the provincial government.

Teachers with all of the various unions are expected to be in strike positions come September.
