Josef Topol has died at age 80.
Along with the late Vaclav Havel, Topol was considered to be a leading Czech playwright of the second half of the 20th century.
In the mid-1960s, Topol co-founded Prague’s influential “Theater Beyond the Gate.”
After the 1968 Soviet invasion crushed reforms in Czechoslovakia, the theatre was closed and Topol was banned.
Today his best plays, including “End of Carnival” and “Cat on the Rails” repeatedly return to the Prague stage.
