There were a few more traffic problems around the GTA this morning as motorists adjusted to the new, temporary HOV lanes that went into effect in advance of the Pan Am Games. As of today cars must carry three people to use the HOV lanes, not two as is normally the case.

Those caught in violation could be fined up to $110  and lose three demerit points.

The fact that new HOV lanes are the left-most lane of the highway caused additional confusion this morning, when people are accustomed to seeing the HOV lanes on the right.

The HOV lanes, on the Queen Elizabeth Way, the Gardiner Expressway, Lake Shore Boulevard, Jane Street south of Highway 407 and highways 401, 427 and 404, will be in effect from 5 a.m. until 11 p.m. until July 27.

The designated lanes will be open to accredited games vehicles, public transit vehicles, taxis, emergency vehicles and all vehicles with three or more people.

The lanes will also remain in place for the Para Pan Am Games from July 28 to August 18, however they will be open to all vehicles with two or more people during that time.
