As thousands of athletes arrive in the city in preparation for next week’s Pan Am Games, delays and cancellations were reported at Pearson Airport this morning. The problems are the result of a labour dispute.
The contract between several airlines and the company that takes care of refueling their aircraft ran out recently. The employees of Consolidated Aviation Fuelling Services are concerned that they’ll lose their jobs when the new contractor takes over, so many of them stayed home in protest. Their union, International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, has not sanctioned the walkout.
Airlines are advising travelers to check before making their way to the airport. Air Canada has offered to wave its rebooking fee for those affected by the dispute.
