Mayor John Tory says he’s committed to coming up with new rules to regulate the ride sharing company, Uber.

Tory makes clear he is not advocating for Uber, but only for the travelling public.

Tory says Toronto needs to come up with one by-law that applies to everyone, so no one is operating outside of the law.

Tory also says it’s clear the city needs a bylaw that covers both taxi and Uber drivers to provide for fair competition, ensure safety for all involved, and still allow for convenient service for consumers.

The Mayor says the proposal will be designated by representatives of both the taxi industry and Uber to be presented to city council this fall.

Friday, an Ontario court judge ruled against the city in its attempt to get an injunction that would have shut Uber down.  The judge dismissed the application, saying there is no evidence the company is operating as a taxi broker, or that it breached city bylaws.
