Rescuing pieces of heritage from aging buildings is often difficult with the amount of construction we see nowadays, but one important Toronto store front window will be conserved.

“Butter, Cheese, Cream, Eggs – Fresh Every Day”  are the words written in Yiddish in an old store front window at 29 Baldwin St.  The store was formerly Mendel’s Creamery back in the 1940’s when Baldwin Village was a popular spot for Jewish immigrants.

The store was eventually taken over by John’s Italian Caffe, who preserved the sign.  However, John’s was recently sold to a bubble tea shop which covered up the Yiddish letters, leaving some residents worried that the sign had been chiselled off.

Luckily, the letters were not scratched off and destroyed. The owner of the new tea shop, Daniel Li, caught wind of the importance of the window and is now considering three options. He says he with either leave the window where it is, reinstall it somewhere else in the shop, or donate it to the Ontario Jewish  Archives.
