Working up a good sweat may be the best remedy for those whose memory is starting to sputter – because of Alzheimer’s disease.
New research says the effects are modest, but a series of studies has found that vigorous workouts can be helpful – for people with mild memory impairment and decreased levels of a warped protein – linked to risk of later Alzheimer’s.
Cognitive neuroscientist Laura Baker from Wake Forest School of Medicine in North Carolina reported some of the research – at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference.
Doctors have long advised people to keep active as they get older – and a broad body of research shows that physical activity can improve cognition – in older people who are healthy.
