Russia’s new gambit for a vast area of Arctic territory – including the North Pole – has backed Canada into a corner in future negotiations over the icy region.
Moscow revealed a revised international submission today – and is claiming 1.2 million square kilometres of the Arctic shelf.
Russia, Canada, the U.S., Denmark and Norway are working with the United Nations to define jurisdictional boundaries in the Arctic – an area thought to hold as much as a quarter of the planet’s undiscovered gas and oil.
