The Stratford Festival is in mourning after the death of Robin Phillips, who served as its artistic director for six seasons.

Phillips was at the helm of the festival from 1975 to 1980 – a period which is still fondly remembered by many as a “golden age.”

Current artistic director Antoni Cimolino says he was profoundly influenced by Phillips and “he seemed to make the impossible not only achievable but beautiful. His productions were crystal clear, emotionally honest and elegant in their simplicity – with every movement, sound or visual element carefully considered – yet they had a sense of freedom and vibrant life not often experienced in the theatre.”

Phillips died on July 25th – at the age of 75.

A memorial service will be held next Tuesday, August 11th at 6pm at Saint James Anglican Church, 41 Mornington Street, Stratford.
