Niagara-on-the-Lake’s Shaw Festival has chosen British-born Tim Carroll as its new artistic director.
Carroll officially takes over December first of next year for the the start of the 2017 season. In the meantime, he will work with current artistic director Jackie Maxwell, who is departing at the end of next year after 14 seasons.
Carroll is best known for his Shakespearean works, which utilized original practices of The Bard where possible. He is best known on this side of the Atlantic for his years as an associate director at London’s Globe Theatre and in particular for his productions of Richard III and Twelfth Night. Twelfth Night’s Broadway run in the 2013-14 season resulted in a Tony nomination. Prior to that he directed productions with the Stratford Festival.
