Stephen Harper’s Conservatives have started retooling their election campaign after a series of missteps that has dropped the party to third place in recent opinion polls.

It has come to light that the Conservatives have sought the help of Lynton Crosby; a controversial Australian strategist known as the Wizard of Oz who masterminded the successful campaign of British Prime Minister David Cameron earlier this year.

But Conservative campaign spokesperson Kory Teneycke is playing down reports that Crosby is stepping in to take over from campaign director Jenni Byrne, who’s been criticized within party ranks for a string of missteps.

Pollster Nik Nanos told Zoomer Radio’s Goldhawk Fights Back this week, the Conservatives are likely trailing because they haven’t been able to control the agenda of the election campaign.

“In August, the focus was on them with the Duffy trial and their defense of the economy and their track record, and now the Syria issue. So it’s one of those things where they’ve been on the defensive. They controlled the timing of the election campaign, called the election, but they’ve been on the defensive almost since day one,” Nanos explained.

For the first time in the federal election campaign, Justin Trudeau’s Liberals are leading with voter support across the country.

Overnight polling by Nanos Research gives the Liberals 32.1 percent support, closely followed by the NDP at 30.6 percent and the Conservatives at 28.6.

Statistically, it’s a three way tie for the major parties.
