The New Democrats have a plan to win over voters in the Greater Toronto Area.

NDP Candidate Andrew Cash, who’s running for re-election in the riding of Davenport, plans to roll out a Greater Toronto Area-centric version of the party’s policy platform this morning at the Centre for Social Innovation (CSI Annex) on Bathurst Street.

A published report says the mini platform puts together policy proposals that include investments in affordable housing, $12.9 billion over 20 years for transit infrastructure in the GTA, income-averaging for cultural workers, phased out interest on student loans, creating or maintaining nearly 165,000 $15-a-day child care spaces, and reducing backlogs in processing immigration applications with a greater priority on family reunification.

The New Democrats won seven Toronto seats in 2011, but lost Trinity-Spadina to the Liberals in a 2014 byelection. A redrawing of the riding boundaries has formed the new riding of Spadina-Fort York. NDP candidate Olivia Chow is battling Liberal incumbent Adam Vaughan for the win. These two candidates along with the Conservative challenger will be here at the ZoomerPlex for a debate on Monday at 11:05am on Zoomer Radio’s Goldhawk Fights Back.

NDP Leader Tom Mulcair, meantime, is fighting to keep voter support nationwide.

“Do we want a modern Canada that takes care with the future on big, important issues like climate change with a government that believes in helping people, taking care of the economy, while taking care of the environment and social issues that the NDP’s proposing. That’s what this election’s about. That’s what I’m going to be talking about in that TVA debate,” Mulcair proclaimed. That final leaders’ debate is in French tonight.

The latest Nanos tracking poll suggests NDP support is slipping while the Conservatives and Liberals are tied for the lead.
