A former high-ranking military commander has some criticism – for those who oppose military intervention in Iraq and Syria.

Former chief of defence staff – General Rick Hillier, says not much progress can be realized – until the leadership of Islamic State is taken out.

The fight against ISIS has become an election issue.

N-D-P Leader Tom Mulcair has said he would end bombing campaigns and other military action – and put more resources into refugee and humanitarian efforts.

But Hillier says the humanitarian crisis won’t end – unless the leaders of Islamic State are dealt with first.

And he says that means the air strikes must continue – as well as the ongoing presence of special forces in the region.

Hillier was in charge of Canada’s military between 2005 and 2008.
