Fans may recall actor Benedict Cumberbatch pleading with them not to use their cell phones to record him playing the lead in Hamlet. It’s anybody’s guess as to how many of them honoured his request but it’s certain some 225 thousand viewers watched Cumberbatch’s take on the melancholy prince as it was shown live in movie theatres around the world last week. Turns out that’s the largest global audience for a live broadcast of any title in the history of National Theatre Live. The play was filmed in London’s Barbican Theatre.
