The Ontario government has a lawsuit on its hands.

The Ontario Medical Association is suing the Wynne government over recent cuts in fees paid to doctors.

The action comes in the form of a constitutional charter challenge on behalf of the physicians group – saying the latest reductions in fees will compromise patient care across the province.

The government has slashed funding for physician services – by a total of 6.9 per cent since February.

But Health Minister Eric Hoskins argues that Ontario’s doctors are among the best-paid in the country – and their average salary is more than $358,000.

The minister says he is disappointed the OMA has chosen to litigate and he says fee cuts were needed – so more money could be invested in home and community care, supports for mental health, and other areas.

But the OMA’s challenge states that the fee cuts are unfair to doctors and risks leaving patients without necessary care.
