More and more elderly people are taking statins for heart health, but researchers are looking into whether these meds make them more susceptible to the flu.

In the first of two studies, they compared antibodies to three flu strains and their blood levels in both statin users and nonusers.

They found that statin users had between 28 and 67 per cent lower blood concentration of antibodies to the vaccine strains.

The second study looked at flu vaccine effectiveness in preventing acute respiratory illness.

They found that statin users had on average between 11 and 18 percent lower effectiveness during local and widespread influenza circulation, respectively.

You can read about the results in the Journal of Infectious Diseases.
