Patients suffering from the most common type of stroke may experience more benefits from a relatively new approach to treatment.
Researchers looked at eight studies that included nearly 2500 patients of strokes caused by a clot or other blockage in a blood vessel of the brain.
Normally these patients would receive tPA, a medicine given to patients within a few hours of having a stroke that dissolves the clot.
The newer approach involves physically going into the vessel with a wire or other small instrument and mechanically and/or chemically removing the clot.
The study shows the therapy was linked to better outcomes with no change in negative consequences of the procedure at 90 days after the stroke.
Results appear in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
