The Edmonton Eskimos take on the Ottawa Redblacks in this Sunday’s Grey Cup game – and that is just too much for the national Inuit organization.
The group says it’s time for the Edmonton team to change its name.
President Natan Obed says Eskimo is a relic from a time when Inuit people had no control over their lives – and he would be offended if someone were to call him an Eskimo today.
Edmonton team officials have consistently said – they have never had an official complaint about the name.
Eskimo is still used by American Inuit – but Obed says Canadians stopped using the term in the 1970s – when they began negotiating their land claim with the federal government.
