The second Trudeau era has officially begun in Parliament – with the reading of a throne speech – setting out the priorities of the new Liberal government – under Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
The brief speech was delivered by Governor General David Johnston – promising a new spirit of openness and civility in Parliament – one in which all members on the government and opposition benches will be honoured, respected and heard.
It expands on five themes that were central to the Liberals’ stunning victory in the October 19th election.
First, it repeats Trudeau’s promise to cut the tax rate for middle-income earners – and provide a more generous child benefit to those who need it – paid for by a tax hike on the wealthiest one per cent.
It also pledges significant new investment in infrastructure to boost the economy.
The speech also reiterates Trudeau’s promises to run an open and transparent government, reform the electoral system, work with the provinces to put a price on carbon, launch an inquiry into missing and murdered aboriginal women and legalize marijuana.
