“Anything that we can do to be creative, to alleviate congestion on our highways helps. It helps improve quality of life, it helps commercial goods get to market quicker,” said Ontario Transportation Minister Steven Del Duca this morning in announcing a new pilot program on the QEW for the HOV lane to double as a high occupancy toll lane beginning in the spring of 2016. He says the HOT lane will be offered between Trafalgar and Guelph Line.

Del Duca also says an HOV and HOT lane will be created on the extension of the 427 from Highway 409 north when it opens in 2021.

Del Duca says the lanes are different from what took place during the Pan Am Games because none of the general purpose lanes will be taken away and the carpool lanes remain at 2 passengers per vehicle.

“So with Pan Am and Parapan Am what we did was added in over and above the existing kilometres of HOVs that we had and we added in temporary HOVs. We’re not doing that here. We’re taking an existing HOV that motorists in this region would be very well familiar with on the QEW between Guelph Line and Trafalgar. It’s not changing. No general purpose lanes are being removed to make this happen. We’re simply converting it to make an HOT,” Del Duca further explained.

Del Duca also says there will be a limited number of permits for drivers who are interested in paying a fee to drive alone in their vehicles in an existing HOV lane. He plans to announce the amount of the toll for the pilot HOT lane in the spring.
