Britain wants to join Canada and a few other countries who deploy women soldiers in combat roles. Prime Minister David Cameron wants to have combat capable women soldiers by the end of the year. Currently British women can serve as fighter pilots, sailors and submariners but they are not allowed to serve in the infantry or armored corps units whose primary task is close quarters combat.
