Canada’s palliative care is in critical condition and federal and provincial governments need to guarantee its access in legislation.
This is the view of a report from the Canadian Cancer Society, which says critically ill patients are falling through the cracks of the health care system.
It is also is calling for improvements to address the patchwork of care across the country.
In its findings, the society says a large number of patients are turning to emergency rooms and intensive care units that are not equipped to provide palliative care due to a lack of better options.
Gabriel Miller, the director of public issues for the Canadian Cancer Society, says Canada needs to fix its “approach” to palliative care.
Miller hopes the government will address the issue when Health Minister Jane Philpott meets with her provincial and territorial counterparts later this month in Vancouver.
Gabriel Miller will have more to say about the Canadian Cancer Society report on palliative care on Zoomer Radio’s Goldhawk Fights Back after today’s 11am news.
