A University in British Columbia has announced the appointment of the world’s first Chair in Transgender Studies.

Sociology professor, Dr. Aaron Devor will work with students, researchers and community activists – to advance the study into a broad range of topics – affecting the lives of transgender people.

The University of Victoria says Dr. Devor will explore crucial issues on the subject – including health care, discrimination, poverty and suicide.

A US$1 million donation from the Tawani Foundation – which was founded and is led by transgender billionaire Jennifer Pritzker – will establish the Chair in the university’s Faculty of Social Sciences.

Dr. Devor is an elected member of the International Academy of Sex Research, a fellow of the Society for the Scientific Study of Sexuality – and is also an award-winning teacher.
