The city of Toronto will now treat Uber like major cab companies after giving it a brokerage licence even though UberX drivers continue breaking city by-laws.
Uber Toronto
Uber applied for the licence for its Uber Taxi platform last May, but did not seek one for its UberX platform, where drivers use their own vehicles to pick up fares.
That’s the one conventional cab companies say are breaking city by-laws, that state taxi brokerages are not allowed to connect riders to unlicensed cabs.
The city’s currently drawing up new ground transportation rules aimed at eliminating Uber’s advantage and leveling the playing field.
Uber’s Taxi platform does not face the same criticism as it only allows users to order and pay for conventional cabs using the app.
