A Canadian member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is worried that some new voting rules – will discriminate against older members.

Nancy Beiman is based in Burlington, Ontario.

She’s a member in the Short Films and Feature Animation Category.

Beiman has written to Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs – expressing her opposition to changes in members’ voting status.

The Academy has announced that “beginning later this year, each new member’s voting status will last 10 years – and will be renewed if that new member has been active in motion pictures during that decade.”

Beiman has been a member of the academy for 20 years.

She says it’s unclear what “active in motion pictures” means.

The Sheridan College professor is concerned the changes could exclude people like herself – who’ve been working in related fields for the past 10 years – but haven’t received on-screen credit.
