A jury has found Toronto police constable James Forcillo guilty of attempted murder in the shooting death of Sammy Yatim.

Constable James Forcillo was found not guilty of second-degree murder in the 18-year-old’s death aboard an empty streetcar in July 2013.

His lawyer, Peter Brauti, has filed a ”stay of proceedings” which if granted would mean Forcillo will again be presumed innocent.

If it fails, the defence would consider an appeal.

Chief Mark Saunders says Yatim’s death prompted the police service to review the way it deals with those in crisis.

”We (police) along with those, who work with the mental health community have much work to do to provide greater supports, care and facilities for those in crisis so they get the help they need, when they need it.”

Toronto Mayor John Tory would not comment on the verdict as the case is still before the courts, but says ”there is and can be no satisfaction in any matter that involves one of our citizens.  The people of Toronto must work to keep each other safe.  We must learn and we must make sure that Sammy Yatim’s death – a dark moment for our city, results in real, meaningful change.”

Yatim’s mother says she’d like to be part of the discussion to change the police training policies when dealing with those in crisis so this doesn’t happen again.
