Some Canadians earning a low income are siphoning money from their food and rent budgets – to pay for Internet service..

That’s according to the advocacy group ACORN Canada -which represents low to moderate-income families.

Nearly 400 members were surveyed – and more than half said they skimmed money from other budget items – to pay for Internet access – because they consider it an essential service.

ACORN says the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission should work with business – to provide high-speed Internet for $10 a month – to families below Canada’s low-income line.

It also says the Canadian government should create a program to subsidize computers for low-income earners.

Stats-Can reports that In 2013, 13.5 per cent of Canada’s population, or 4.6 million people, qualified under the Low Income Measure – when the LIM threshold for a family of four – was $41,866 after taxes.
