After kicking off activities leading up to NBA All-Star weekend, the Toronto mayor was asked about a planned protest by taxi drivers over Uber.
John Tory says he acknowledges that the current situation is not fair to cabbies, but disrupting traffic won’t result in a quicker resolution.
”By having a protest and disrupting the city and frankly taking away from their own ability to make a living during that time, that is not going to speed this process up by one minute. And so I regret the fact that is the course of action they’re talking about when in fact we’re trying to work as fast as we can to bring an element of fairness, to bring a new regulation in to take us to the next chapter.”
City staff are working on a new bylaw that’s expected to go before council this spring.
The cabbies held a similar protest in early December.
The mayor says the police ”will have to take whatever steps are necessary” if they go ahead with another protest this weekend.
In addition to the all-star game, the Canadian International Auto Show begins Friday.
