The province’s transportation minister is asking snow plow operators who didn’t properly clear highways – to agree to arbitration.

That way, some of the millions of dollars in fines levied against them – can be collected.

Steven Del Duca says the companies contracted to keep Ontario’s highways clear of snow and ice – have many ways to appeal fines levied by the ministry – when the job is not done properly or within a proper time frame.

Ontario wants to recover some of the 47 million dollars in outstanding fines.

Del Duca says the government may have to sue the contractors- if they don’t agree to arbitration.

The province is carved into 21 sections for road maintenance contracts – and all of the contractors have been fined – because of poor performance standards.
